VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, MP3, and OGG, as well as for DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It also can be used as a server for unicast or multicast streams in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
The most prominent additions to version 0.8.6 are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, and a full-screen controller
VLC media player versions 0.8.6b and lower suffer from a security vulnerability in the CDDA, Vorbis, Theora and SAP plugins. More technical details are available in our advisory.
An updated release of VLC is available which includes a few other fixes as well. The full list of changes can be found here.
We strongly recommend all users to update to this new version.
Version 0.8.6c includes cropping in Direct3D and a variety of bug fixes.
